Lest we forget

People young and old in the UK are making poppies to commemorate and celebrate the end of the First World War. Here is a quick and easy pattern which should take under five minutes to make. If you make them for friends and relatives please do encourage them to make a donation to the poppy appeal.

Fast and Easy Poppy Pattern 

Use chunky yarn in black and red with a 4mm hook. For a smaller and more delicate poppy use dk yarn and a 3mm hook.

Black Yarn

Chain 2

5 sc into the second chain from the hook

2 sc into each single crochet (10 sc)

Slip stitch into the first sc but pull through the red yarn instead of black

Red Yarn

Row 1

Chain 1 – counts as a first stich

Sc into the same stitch

Do 1 sc into the next 4 stitches ( 6 sc altogether including the first ch 1 at the end of row 1)

Row 2

Ch 1 turn

Sc into the first st

2sc into each of the next 4 stitches

sc into the next stith (10 sc at the end of row 1)

Row 3

Ch1 turn

Sc into first st

2 hds in next st

2 dc in next st

1 dc in the next 4 sts

2 dc in the next st

2 hds in the next st

1sc in the last st ( 14 st at the end of row 2)

Now put 2 slip stitches down the side of the poppy petal to get back to the black centre

Turn your poppy upside down to work on the other side.

Row 1

Sc into the same stitch that already has a red sc in it

Do 6 more sc crochets around (7 stitches at the end of that row)

Row 2

Ch 1 turn

Sc into the very first st

2 sc In the next st

1 sc in the next 3 st

2sc in the next st

1sc in the last st (9 st at the end of row 2)

Row 3

Ch1 turn

1 sc into the very first st

2 hds in the next st

1dc in the next 2 st

2dc into the next st

1dc into the next 2 st

2 hds into the next st

1sc in the last st (12 st at the end of row 3)

slip stitch down the side of the second poppy leaf.

Turn the poppy over and tie together the red and black thread nearest each other (not the center one) in a tight double knot this will make the poppy have a slight fold to it like a natural poppy petal. Weave in the ends
